Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Las Vegas
Intensive Outpatient Program for Addiction in Las Vegas, NV

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Addiction in Las Vegas, NV

Taking steps toward recovery while managing the demands of daily life is something many people feel is out of reach.
At Desert Hope Treatment Center in Las Vegas, our Intensive Outpatient Program is designed to show you that it is not.
Our IOP gives you access to structured, evidence-based addiction treatment three days per week, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon, while allowing you to return home, go to work, care for your family, and live your life. You do not have to put everything on hold to get better. Many people find that this balance is exactly what makes recovery stick.
Whether you are stepping down from our inpatient program, beginning treatment for the first time, or adding more structure to your current outpatient care, IOP at Desert Hope can meet you where you are.
What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?
An Intensive Outpatient Program, or IOP, is a structured form of addiction treatment recognized by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) as a Level II level of care. It provides more support and clinical intensity than standard outpatient therapy, but does not require patients to stay overnight at a facility.
IOP is designed to treat substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions through a combination of individual therapy, group therapy, psychoeducation, and skill-building sessions. Patients attend treatment on scheduled days each week and apply what they learn directly in their real lives between sessions.
What IOP Is Designed to Do
- Help patients identify and address the psychosocial factors contributing to addiction
- Build a strong, lasting support network within and outside of treatment
- Support the development of abstinence and relapse prevention skills
- Encourage active participation in community recovery networks
- Foster practical coping strategies and problem-solving skills for daily life
How IOP Compares to Other Levels of Care
| Level of Care | Hours per Week | Where You Live | Best For |
| Medical Detox | 168 (24/7 supervised) | At the facility | Physical withdrawal from substances |
| Inpatient / Residential | 168 (24/7 support) | At the facility | Severe addiction, unstable home environment |
| Partial Hospitalization (PHP) | 20 to 35+ hrs/wk | Home or sober living | Step-down from inpatient, high clinical need |
| Intensive Outpatient (IOP) | 9 to 30 hrs/wk | Home or sober living | Moderate support needs, work/family obligations |
| Standard Outpatient (OP) | 3 to 5 hrs/wk | Home | Mild addiction, strong home support system |
| Sober Living | Flexible | Structured sober residence | Post-treatment transition and accountability |
What to Expect in the IOP Program

IOP at Desert Hope is not a one-size-fits-all program. It is designed to serve people at different points in their recovery journey, and our clinical team will work with you during the admissions process to confirm it is the right level of care for your needs.
IOP may be a strong fit if you:
- Are stepping down from inpatient or residential treatment and need continued structure as you return to daily life
- Are entering addiction treatment for the first time and do not require 24-hour medical supervision
- Have work, school, or family obligations that make an inpatient program difficult or impossible
- Live in a stable, supportive home environment conducive to early recovery
- Are looking to add more clinical support to a standard outpatient program that is not meeting your needs
- Are managing a co-occurring mental health condition alongside a substance use disorder
IOP for People Living With Families
For parents, caregivers, and partners in recovery, IOP offers an opportunity to be present at home while still receiving meaningful clinical support. The program schedule is designed around morning hours so that afternoon and evening family time remains available.
IOP for People Who Are Working
Many of Desert Hope’s IOP patients maintain employment during treatment. Because sessions are held in the mornings three days per week, most clients can keep their afternoon or evening work schedules intact. Our team can also help coordinate with employers when appropriate.
IOP vs. PHP vs. Standard Outpatient: What Is the Difference?
All three are forms of outpatient care, meaning patients live at home rather than at the treatment facility. The key differences are in the frequency, duration, and intensity of sessions.
Chart 2: Comparing Outpatient Levels of Care
| Program | Typical Sessions | Hours per Week | Clinical Intensity |
| Partial Hospitalization (PHP) | 5 days/week | 20 to 35+ hours | Highest outpatient level |
| Intensive Outpatient (IOP) | 3 days/week | 9 to 30 hours | Moderate to high |
| Standard Outpatient (OP) | 1 to 2 days/week | 3 to 5 hours | Lower, ongoing maintenance |

At Desert Hope, our Las Vegas outpatient facility offers both PHP and IOP, and patients can move between levels of care as their clinical needs change. A patient might begin in detox or inpatient, move to PHP, step down to IOP, and continue into standard outpatient or sober living. Movement in either direction is possible and clinically guided.

A Typical IOP Session
- Group therapy focusing on relapse prevention, coping skills, and emotional regulation

- Family therapy sessions when clinically appropriate and desired
- Case management support to address housing, employment, and life skills needs
Your Individual Treatment Plan
Every patient at Desert Hope begins with a comprehensive intake assessment. Your clinical team uses the results to develop a treatment plan specific to your history, your goals, and your needs. That plan is reviewed and adjusted as you progress through the program. Nothing about your care is generic.
Therapies and Treatments in the IOP
Desert Hope’s IOP integrates a range of evidence-based therapies. No single approach works for everyone, so our clinical team draws on multiple modalities to build a program that fits.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps patients identify and change thought patterns that drive substance use. By learning to recognize negative automatic thoughts and replace them with healthier responses, patients build a strong internal toolkit for managing cravings, triggers, and high-risk situations.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT blends acceptance-based strategies with behavioral change techniques. It is especially effective for patients managing intense emotions, impulsivity, or co-occurring conditions like borderline personality disorder, depression, or trauma.
Motivational Interviewing (MI)
MI is a collaborative, patient-centered approach that helps people find and strengthen their internal motivation to change. It is particularly valuable for patients who feel ambivalent about recovery or who have struggled to maintain commitment in previous treatment attempts.
Family Therapy
Addiction affects more than the individual. Family therapy brings loved ones into the healing process, addressing communication patterns, enabling behaviors, and the relational dynamics that can support or undermine recovery. Family involvement is a meaningful predictor of long-term success.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
When clinically appropriate, patients in the IOP may receive medication-assisted treatment. FDA-approved medications such as buprenorphine, naltrexone, and others can reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, making it significantly easier to engage fully in therapy and build lasting recovery skills.
Evidence-Based Therapies at Desert Hope IOP
| Therapy | What It Addresses | Best For |
| Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) | Negative thought patterns, triggers, and cravings | Most substance use disorders |
| Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) | Emotional regulation, impulse control, and distress | Co-occurring disorders, trauma |
| Motivational Interviewing (MI) | Internal motivation, ambivalence, commitment | Early recovery, relapse history |
| Family Therapy | Relationships, communication, enabling dynamics | Patients with family conflict or involvement |
| Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) | Physical cravings and withdrawal symptoms | Opioid and alcohol use disorders |
| Group Therapy | Peer support, shared experience, accountability | All IOP patients |

The Role of Sober Living During IOP
For patients who do not have a stable or supportive home environment, sober living can be a powerful complement to the IOP. At Desert Hope’s Resolutions sober living facility, residents receive transportation to and from outpatient therapy, ensuring consistency in attendance and accountability in early recovery.
Sober living gives patients the chance to begin transitioning back into everyday life at their own pace. Residents work on building a daily routine, reintegrating work or school, and developing the skills needed for independent sober living, all while maintaining the structure of active treatment.
- Supportive, substance-free residential environment throughout IOP
- Transportation to and from Desert Hope’s outpatient facility provided
- Community of peers in recovery offering mutual accountability
- Space to develop daily structure, life skills, and healthy relationships
- Bridge between intensive treatment and fully independent living
How IOP Fits Into Your Continuum of Care
At Desert Hope, we think about treatment as a continuum, not a single event. IOP is one part of a larger system of care, and the level of care you receive can shift as your needs evolve.
IOP as an Entry Point
Some patients come directly into IOP following an intake assessment. If medical detox is not required and your clinical team determines that IOP provides the appropriate level of support, you can begin your recovery here without first entering a higher level of care.
IOP as a Step Down
After completing inpatient rehab or a PHP program, IOP offers a meaningful bridge back to daily life. The structure and clinical support continue while the intensity gradually decreases, reducing the risk of relapse during one of the most vulnerable periods in recovery.
IOP as a Step Up
If you are currently enrolled in a standard outpatient program and finding that you need more support, transitioning up to IOP is a sign of self-awareness, not failure. Our clinical team can facilitate that move quickly and without disruption to your care.
Does Insurance Cover IOP?
In most cases, yes. Under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, most insurance plans are required to cover IOP for addiction treatment at a level comparable to coverage for physical health conditions. The Affordable Care Act also classifies substance use disorder treatment as an essential health benefit.
Desert Hope accepts most major private insurance plans and is in-network with many carriers. Our admissions team can verify your benefits quickly, confidentially, and at no cost to you.
- Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Humana, and many others
- In-network rates available for many plans
- Free insurance verification available online or by phone
- Same-day admissions available for eligible patients
- Payment plans and financial assistance options are available for those without insurance
