Desert Hope’s curriculum and programs are research-based and include the use of research supported therapy modalities. Our licensed therapists use Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques and other research-based treatment modalities to “meet clients where they are.” More importantly, these techniques work to move each client from ambivalence about treatment toward a desire for real change.

Dr. James Tenney has been a fully licensed Clinical Psychologist since1994. His internship, graduate program, and practicum placements are all fully accredited by the American Psychological Association. He is the Clinical Director at Desert Hope. He is specifically sensitive to helping his clients meet their professional responsibilities while also taking thorough care of themselves.
Dr. Tenney has been a practicing Clinical Psychologist long enough to avoid fads. He treats sleep disorders, trauma, depression, and anxiety with a solid, effective clinical foundation. His clients are encouraged to include their spouses and concerned family members in treatment if appropriate; including loved ones is the best practice to address how broadly some challenges are felt. When he is not spending time with his own wife and children, Dr. Tenney can be found running ultramarathons. Races of 50 miles and greater are vivid test beds for self-regulation techniques, decision management, and endurance of adversity. His results have been published in Ultrarunner Magazine. He has also defended, and still holds, the Fastest Known Time for Sunrise/Frenchman Mountain and Griffith Peak.
